A Message from the Laboratory

Hello everyone,

Welcome to our returning students. This year “Science Research Elective” has undergone a name change to “CREST”.

CSIRO CREST (CREativity in Science and Technology) is the program which facilitates this amazing elective.

Silver CREST Awards

Three students have received their Silver CSIRO CREST awards for their project work in 2016 and 2017.

Batool Zehra’s and Fatima Mirza’s (past student) technology project was titled “Construction of a hydroponics and transpiration chamber, for the irrigation and capture of transpired water from plants”. We thank their mentor, Mr Ray Harvey, for his guidance and expertise.

Ealaf Al Hassani’s science project was titled “Steam Pressure Treating Australian Sugarcane Mulch to Improve the Clean-up of Oil Spills”.

Tara Almosa received her long overdue award for her team project with Huda Al Husaini and Elham Shiday for their project titled “Utilisation of Seawater to Irrigate Garlic with the Aid of Halophytes to Reduce Soil Salinity”.

Congratulations to the students for their hard work!

BHP Science and Engineering Awards

Our 2016 and 2017 CREST students, who won bursary prizes in the state level Science Teachers Association of Victoria (STAV) Science Talent Search last year for investigative research, were selectively entered into the prestigious national level BHP Billiton Foundation Science and Engineering Awards.

They have won semi-finalist prizes, and each student has won up to $100 prize money and a certificate.

This is an outstanding result and the following wonderful students and their talented CREST teachers should be proud of their efforts. Well done girls!
